Consul General (CG) of Mexico to Hong Kong and Macao Mr Damián Martínez Tagüeña attended a meeting with Commander of Marine Outer Waters District (MOWDIST) Bradley Wright on June 7 about the steps taken in Mexico and Hong Kong to combat the illegal trading of Totoaba fish maw. Totoaba is listed as an endangered species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

The Mexican CG was briefed on the Force's stance on combating wildlife crime; the capabilities of the Small Boat Division for interdicting smuggling activities; intelligence gathering and investigation related to smuggling activities; and co-operation between the Marine Police and the Mainland counterparts on tackling a range of issues from security to environmental matters.

The meeting enabled the Marine officers to understand more about Totoaba, the difference between Totoaba and dried fish maw as well as areas for further co-operation between the Hong Kong Police Force and the Mexican law enforcement/environmental protection authorities. Mr Wright undertook to assist the Mexican authorities in raising Marine officers' awareness of smuggling and illegal trading of endangered species.
