On the evening of August 8, Commissioner Lo Wai-chung visited the Police Tactical Unit Bravo Company (PTU B Coy), a training company in PTU Headquarters (HQ), in order to enhance his understanding of their daily duties through observing the Internal Security (IS) exercise and chatting with the officers. This visit is part of an ongoing initiative to further engage frontline officers by means of direct exchange in their working environment.

Upon arrival, the Commissioner was greeted by the management of the PTU HQ and PTU B Coy. He was then accompanied by Station Sergeant So Ming-tak of PTU B Coy and PTU's Training Sergeant Ng Cheuk-wah to a canteen of the PTU HQ, where they had an early dinner with Number 2 Platoon of PTU B Coy (PTU Pln B2) officers who would be acting as "the enemy" in an exercise that night. There was frank exchange during the dinner gathering about the tough training in the PTU HQ and the challenges that the frontline officers were facing.

After dinner, the Commissioner proceeded to Tuen Mun Police Station where officers of Number 3 Platoon of PTU B Coy (PTU Pln B3) were working on their plan for the exercise. The training staff explained the objective of the exercise to the Commissioner during the journey. The Commissioner attended the operation briefing conducted by the Commander of PTU Pln B3 and then went to the exercise ground, Tuen Mun Industrial Area, to observe the exercise.

The exercise simulated a scenario in which a group of violent workers caused widespread damage to the buildings after failing to reach an agreement with their employer in a labour dispute. PTU Pln B3 was tasked to conduct an IS sweep and restore the public order. The Commissioner followed the platoons from San On Street to Hung Cheung Road to observe the whole exercise, witnessing how the officers responded to the fierce attacks and restored the law and order.

The Commissioner highly appreciated the professional performance of both platoon officers during the exercise and encouraged them to carry on their good effort in the trainings so as to prepare themselves well for the challenges ahead. He also seized this opportunity to reassure the officers that the management would fully support their frontline work so that they could wholeheartedly serve the community, which was paramount to the success of the Force.

In the following day, the Commissioner visited the Aberdeen campus of the Hong Kong Police College where he again learned more about the training to new recruits and had a direct dialogue with the training staff.

After the engagement activity, Mr Ng told OffBeat that the visit provided an occasion for the Commissioner to further understand the difficulties and challenges faced by the PTU. It also helped the Force Management to better assess frontline officers' needs for equipment. On the other hand, the officers learned more about the Force's development and the exchange opportunity had strengthened their sense of belonging.

Police Constable of the PTU Au Yeung Ying-ching who joined the dinner with the Commissioner said that the interaction between the Commissioner and frontline officers fostered a spirit of caring within the Force. Noting that the Commissioner's presence in the exercise was an acknowledgement to their hard work, he said that the visit had boosted their morale, and all officers of the PTU B Coy hoped the Commissioner would visit them again.
