The Junior Police Call (JPC), together with police volunteers and some community groups, took prompt actions to clean up the beaches that were polluted by a spill of palm oil caused by a collision of two cargo ships off Hong Kong in early August.

Put on gears and roll up sleeves, a team of JPC members assisted in clearing the pollutants at St Stephen's Beach on August 9. To continue their effort in a bigger clean-up activity, 59 JPC members teamed up with the police volunteers, "Big Waster" of the Environment Bureau, "Keep Clean Ambassador Ah Tak" of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the neighbourhood of the beaches to clean the worse hit beaches at Pui O Beach on Lantau Island and Hung Shing Yeh Beach on Lamma Island. The JPC had cleared approximately 1.5 tonnes of palm oil in the two-day operation.

With the concerted efforts of the community groups and the JPC, the surface oil in Hong Kong waters had almost been cleared and the situation of palm oil driven ashore had stabilised. The collected palm oil contaminants would be re-used for making candles for charitable purposes.
