New Territories South (NTS) Region hosted a liaison gathering on March 9 for about 100 community leaders, including members of District Fight Crime Committees, District Councils and Rural Committees; Honorary Presidents of Junior Police Call and Senior Police Call; school principals as well as representatives of the security, aviation and transportation sectors.

NTS Regional Commander Patrick Laidler thanked the community partners for their continuous support and co-operation, which led to a significant drop in crime figures. A video was screened to recap NTS officers' achievements in combating crimes and engaging the community in 2017. Then officers of Airport Security Unit, Emergency Unit of NTS and Traffic Branch demonstrated their equipment.

The most touching moments of the event came when four frontline officers shared their unforgettable work experience. Police Constable (PC) Cheung Cho-him of Traffic NTS explained how he intercepted a wanted vehicle while PC Lee Kin-man of Lantau District talked about the rescue of Tai O residents during the passage of severe typhoon Hato. PC Lee Wai-kuen of Emergency Unit NTS shared how he prevented a person from committing suicide. Sergeant Chiu Nga-lui of Regional Crime Unit NTS spoke on the arrest of suspects who were involved in chain burglary cases. They demonstrated their devotion to duty, perseverance and professionalism.

The gathering not only fostered partnership between the officers and the community leaders, but also enabled the leaders to get a deeper understanding of frontline police work.
