A mainlander, Mr Cheung, together with his family members, presented a plaque to officers of Crime Hong Kong Island (HKI) Regional Headquarters on January 24 in recognition of the officers' professionalism in investigating a suspected kidnap case.

In mid-December 2019, the Cheung family came to Hong Kong from Guangzhou. However, Mr Cheung lost contact with his son on December 21. Subsequently, he received an anonymous call saying that his son had been kidnapped and asking for a ransom of $500,000, to be paid in renminbi. After Mr Cheung reported the case to the police, officers of Regional Crime Unit (RCU) 3B of HKI conducted an in-depth investigation and confirmed that the case was a telephone scam. Within 19 hours, RCU officers located Mr Cheung's son without injury and the Cheung family suffered no loss.
