With a view to facilitating community engagement and assisting the non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) community to overcome language barrier, Sham Shui Po District (SSPODIST) made use of the network of Project MAMA to hold three Cantonese classes for NEC children between 2019 and early 2020.

SSPODIST organised the course in collaboration with HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre and New Home Association. Over 60 NEC children learnt Cantonese phonics, vocabularies, sentence structure and daily expression through a variety of activities including group games, singing, storytelling and role-playing.

During role-play exercises, the children practised using Cantonese in real-life scenarios such as shopping at a wet market and a stationery shop. The children found the course novel and interesting as the activities enabled them to learn from practice in a relaxed environment. The course also enhanced their thinking and expression skills. Police officers also took the opportunity to disseminate anti-crime leaflets translated in Urdu language to the students' parents.

SSPODIST will continue to engage with the community through Project MAMA and promote community integration and cultural exchange.
