In light of an upward trend in the number of online shopping scams and e-wallet fraud to which many foreign domestic helpers have fallen victim, the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Hong Kong Island (RCPO HKI) has designed anti-deception leaflets in Tagalog and Indonesian for the domestic helpers.

On December 13, 2020, officers distributed the leaflets in the areas where the foreign domestic helpers usually gather on their day off. Apart from explaining the modus operandi of the scams, the officers also appealed to domestic helpers to beware of suspicious transactions and not to disclose their credit card or personal information to others easily. Regarding the use of e-wallet, users should change the trading password regularly, keep it to themselves and verify the identity of the other party before any transactions.

In addition, striving to work with different communities to promote scam prevention, RCPO HKI discussed with the Indonesian and the Philippine Consulates-General on ways to prevent fraudulent cases and liaised with domestic helper agencies to disseminate anti-deception messages.
