The cyber security challenge cum presentation ceremony for the Cyber Security Competition 2020/21 was held at Cyberport on April 10. The competition was organised by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau with the support of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited and Hong Kong Extra-curricular Activities Masters’ Association.

Commissioner Tang Ping-keung, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited Mr Peter Yan King-shun and Chairman of the Hong Kong Extra-curricular Activities Masters’ Association Mr Chan Kwok-chu officiated at the ceremony. A total of 83 winners were presented with 51 awards for their outstanding performance in the competition.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner said that while the pandemic and the “new normal” have created more opportunities for technological development, they have also brought new crime threats. The number of technology crimes has increased almost five times from 2 000 odd cases in 2011 to nearly 13 000 cases in 2020. The amount of loss reached nearly $3 billion last year, which has caused great concern. In the face of the ever-changing situation of cybercrime, the Force would spare no effort in combating crimes and raising public awareness of cyber security in all aspects, he added.

The theme of the Cyber Security Competition 2020/21 was “Cyber Security Starts From You”. In addition to primary and secondary school categories, an open category was added this year with the aim of further promoting cyber security awareness to the general public. Participants were encouraged to remind their families and friends to stay alert to cyber security threats. With the staunch support of various sectors in the community, school principals, teachers and parents, the competition attracted a record number of 12 000 participants in total.

The Cyber Security Competition 2020/21 comprised two phases. Phase one was “Online Cyber Security Quiz Contest”, during which participants had to answer questions on cyber security on an online platform. After rounds of intense contests, 64 participants advanced to phase two “Cyber Security Challenge”, which included cyber security quizzes, interactive games, and a presentation on cyber security issues.
