Marine Region is now equipped with the latest laser speed detection device, TruCAM II, to step up enforcement actions against the speeding of vessels in Speed Restricted Zones in Hong Kong waters to safeguard the safety of citizens.

Speeding enforcement in the maritime context is not as straightforward as that on roads since the motion of vessels is more complex and does not follow particular set paths or angles, making it harder to accurately capture the speed of the target. The device stores speeding violation data, including clearer digital images, video clips and other related data, which will provide more accurate and reliable evidence to raise enforcement success rate.

A regional working group was formed in July to lay down operating standards, formulate training plans, orders and guidelines, publish training manual and discuss enforcement challenges.
