To tie in with the soon-to-be-launched Big Data Platform (BDP) on the Police Intranet (POINT), the Innovation and Solution Lab (ISLAB) of the Information Systems Wing held six sessions of the Big Data Analytics Workshop in January to equip officers with the knowledge of using BDP to solve different policing problems and enhance work efficiency. A total of 80 officers from 14 major formations participated in the workshop.

In her welcome speech at the workshop, Assistant Commissioner (Information Systems) Kwan Chui-ching said that developing big data analytical capabilities is one of the main initiatives under the Force’s Strategic Direction of “Embracing the Use of Technology for Policing in the Digital Age”. The Force endeavours to explore the application of different big data analytics tools. In the aspect of crime prevention and crime fighting, an in-depth big data analysis on the patterns and trajectory of various kinds of cases could make crime fighting more effective. Additionally, the analysis of the flow of people, logistics and information in policing work could also boost the Force’s capability in preventing and fighting crime under an evolving environment.

Senior Superintendent of ISLAB Dr Hui Chun-wai hoped that the workshop could equip participants with the skills of using BDP so that they can utilise big data analysis to support their day-to-day work.

Apart from explaining the concepts of big data, speakers from ISLAB also shared with participants their experience in data collection, the process of constructing analytical data models on BDP and the visualisation of analysis results. The participants also explored solutions to the problem statement of their respective regions with the knowledge acquired at the workshop.

ISLAB is actively conducting big data research analysis projects with various formations and will provide more training to officers to promote the use of BCP for supporting policing work in Regions in the long run. If any formation is interested in participating in the big data projects of ISLAB, please contact ISLAB’s Project Manager Yip Kai-hung (Tel: 3669-4321) or Senior Inspector Chan Cheuk-hung (Tel: 3660-7421) for discussion.
