Tuen Mun District (TMDIST) noticed that there was an increase in cycling accidents in the district last year, particularly at the road junctions in the Light Rail crossings connecting the pedestrian paths and cycle tracks. In this connection, TMDIST established a Bicycle Patrol Team comprising regular and auxiliary officers in January 2022. In addition to conducting anti-crime patrols at cycling hotspots, the team also promotes cycling safety messages and reminds cyclists to abide by traffic laws and cycling safety rules. Officers may issue verbal warnings and summonses to offenders.

The Bicycle Patrol Team is attached to the District Traffic Team of TMDIST. Officers patrol along the cycle tracks in the district in a team of two. Before joining the team, all members must complete and pass a cycling training programme, which covers the basic structure of a bicyle, proper cycling postures, road safety, daily maintenance, and inspection, etc. During patrols, they are equipped with safety equipment such as helmets, knee pads, gloves, headlights, backlights and first-aid packs, along with their routine police equipment.

TMDIST will continue enhancing publicity and education on road and cycling safety, as well as stepping up enforcement actions to ensure public safety.
