Following the launch of the e-154 App on June 1, 2021, over 900 tablets, 300 smart phones and 240 portable printers have been allocated to Standard Criminal Investigation Course (SCIC) trainees and District Investigation Team officers of all police districts.
Crime Support Group interviewed two frontline crime officers about their experiences in using the e-154 App. Detective Hong from Wan Chai District completed the SCIC in May 2021. A tablet and a portable printer were issued to him during the course. Having used the e-154 App for a few months, Detective Hong commented, “The e-154 App, tablet and portable printer are very useful tools that allow crime officers to take witness statements anytime and anywhere. Informants can give statements at a place other than police stations, thereby enhancing officers’ work efficiency and professionalism. In addition, supervisors can read the statements taken by detectives via the Force’s smart phones or desktop computers to make timely advice and suggestions, thus facilitating the exchange of information among team members.”
Detective Lam from Western District said, “Compared with handwritten or other inputting methods, e-154 App’s speech-to-text engine offers a much faster and accurate means to take witness statements and significantly reduces the word processing time. Officers are also able to review their previous statements for reference whenever necessary.”
In the second quarter of 2022, the e-154 App will incorporate an offline mode and a drawing function, allowing officers to use the e-154 App in places with unstable network. The newly added drawing function enables officers to insert notes to attachments.
