WCHDIV off-duty officer rescues elderly from fire

Police Constable Cheung Ka-chun of Patrol Sub-unit 2 of Wan Chai Division (WCHDIV), who was off-duty in the afternoon of December 16, 2021, passed by a residential building on Spring Garden Lane, Wan Chai, and saw fire and smoke emitting from the building. Prior to the arrival of officers from the Fire Services Department (FSD) and the Force, PC Cheung proactively approached the security guard of the building to grasp the fire situation and floor plan of the building, after which he immediately proceeded to confirm the source of fire.

Having confirmed the source apartment of the fire, PC Cheung passed the information to the Console for a speedy rescue, and notified residents to evacuate. PC Cheung noticed a tottering old man at the scene and worried about his safety given the dense smoke, low visibility and the narrow staircase, so he accompanied the elderly man to the rooftop by following instructions from the FSD officers. Upon reaching the rooftop safely, PC Cheung comforted the elderly man, inspected his health condition and handed him an oxygen bottle for easier breathing. The elderly did not sustain any injury from the incident and later reunited with his family members with the help of PC Cheung.

The family member of the elderly man later wrote an appreciation letter to PC Cheung commending his decisive and calm posture throughout the incident. PC Cheung’s performance fully demonstrated the professional spirit of serving the community as a Force member.

NTN RMPU brings wandering elderly home

A 72-year-old elderly man suffering from dementia was found wandering near Tai Po centre on March 16. He looked panic and was unable to express himself. After receiving a report from a nearby citizen, patrol officers brought the elderly man to Tai Po Police Station. Officers of the Regional Missing Persons Unit of New Territories North (RMPU NTN) pacified him and took him home safely after contacting his family member. Concerned for his well-being in the light of his age, his illness and the fact that he lived alone, officers immediately referred him to the relevant department which replied on the following day that an elderly care home would follow up on the case.

The family member of the elderly man later wrote an appreciation letter to praise the officers of RMPU NTN for their care, effort and empathy.
