Information Systems Wing (ISW) participated in the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in Switzerland from April 26 to 30 and garnered three Gold Medals with the Congratulations of Jury. This is the Force’s maiden participation in this international event, showcasing its achievements in digital policing.

In view of the frequent hiking accidents in recent years and the upward trend in search and rescue operations during the epidemic, the Force has developed a series of smart solutions to tackle challenges faced by rescue units in difficult conditions. These solutions were internally researched and co-developed together with local tech companies utilising cutting-edge technologies. A panel of international jury carefully examined all the entries and honoured all three entries from the Force with the highest awards of Gold Medals with Congratulations of Jury. The three winning entries included:

1. 3R Search and Rescue Plan (R-MAP, R-WATCH and R-CAM) and HKSOS app, which improve rescue coordination and safety of outdoor adventures;

2. Signal Radar, which detects unique SOS signals from challenging terrains and in areas not covered by mobile network; and

3. RescueAI, which predicts and plots search zones for rescue teams.

As the delegation head, Assistant Commissioner (Information Systems) Kwan Chui-ching was particularly proud that the Force was ranked among the most distinguished innovative exhibitors in the international arena. “It is exciting to know that our effort in smart rescue solutions has paid off and has enhanced the Force’s core value of ensuring public safety.”

Senior Systems Manager of ISW Lam Fung-chun shared, “Since there were multiple components to these solutions, it was extremely challenging in terms of how to design, test and make these solutions interoperate synergistically. Given the short span of the project timeline, the achievements are really unprecedented.”

Mr Ken Leung, the Vice President of Altai Technologies Limited, explained how his company helped co-develop the Signal Radar. “This was the first time that we adopted our patented technology with the Force and we are honoured to be part of team that co-developed a unique solution within nine months that saves lives.”

Upon returning to Hong Kong, ISW officers have been testing the new solutions assiduously, especially the HKSOS app, which is planned to be rolled out by the end of this year.
