While she was still Deputy Commissioner (National Security) (DCP NS), Ms Lau Chi-wai gave a sharing session under the Senior Leaders’ Exit Debriefing Series on April 27. She shared with over 70 officers her experience garnered during her 38 years of service in the Force. The sharing session was facilitated by Senior Superintendent Shum Hoi-kwong, the Knowledge Management (KM) Champion on Lessons Learnt.

In addition to sharing her work experience with the officers, Madam Lau illustrated the importance of possessing a high level of conscientiousness and a strong sense of responsibility with her personal experience. She emphasised the significance of paying attention to details, remarking that a supervisory officer should lead by example and walk the talk to win the heart of people. She also pointed out that the success of the Force relied on the unity and esprit de corps of all ranks, so all supervisory officers should do their best to promote cohesion among colleagues and build an effective team. They should also embrace and understand their subordinates’ difficulties, as well as giving timely compliment and support to their subordinates, especially caring and helping new recruits and female police officers.

Madam Lau served previously in various departments. She felt honoured to be the first DCP NS who led the Force in safeguarding national security, even though the task was arduous. Madam Lau pointed out that although the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law had gradually led to social stability, the national security situation of Hong Kong remained precarious. The risk of domestic terrorism could not be ignored, and therefore officers should stay alert at all times. Before concluding the sharing session, Madam Lau encouraged officers to embrace the “fighting spirit”, reinforce risk awareness and strive together for safeguarding national security.
