“Detective Plus”, in collaboration with the Crime Support Group, held a thematic seminar about the investigation and evidence collection for Shaken Baby Syndrome cases on July 18. The event drew over 180 crime investigation officers from various regions, along with members of the Vulnerable Witness Support Cadre. Force Knowledge Management Champion Chan Yan and Senior Superintendent of Crime Support Group Tsang Nga-sze officiated at the seminar and presented certificates of appreciation to the guest speakers Senior Public Prosecutor of Department of Justice Ms Human Lam and Dr Kwan Yat-wah from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong.
Ms Human Lam gave an in-depth sharing on the key strategies for establishing chain of evidence from two recent successful prosecution cases, while Dr Kwan Yat-wah explained in detail the pathological characteristics and clinical diagnostic markers of Shaken Baby Syndrome from the medical perspective.
Officers raised a number of questions on practical issues such as trauma identification, criminal elements, and evidence collection etc. during the interactive Q&A session. The seminar not only effectively enhanced officers’ expertise in handling such cases but also highlighted the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in safeguarding children’s rights.
