LegCo Panel on Security


Accompanied by the Secretary for Security Mr Tang Ping-keung and the Director of Crime and Security Chan Tung, 20 Members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Security visited the Identification Bureau (IB) on March 17 to learn about IB’s professional forensic services and latest technological developments.


The Members toured the Forensic Fingerprint Laboratory and the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Mobile Laboratory, during which officers demonstrated how cutting-edge fingerprint technology and innovative examination techniques could be used to rapidly identify suspects, thereby enhancing the efficiency of criminal investigation.


In 2025, the Fingerprint Laboratory processed over 39 000 pieces of evidence, while the Mobile Laboratory was deployed 23 times to handle cases, showcasing IB’s professional capabilities in crime investigation.


IPCC


Led by the Chairman of the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC) Ms Wong Pui-sze, 17 IPCC members and Secretariat staff visited the IB on March 24.


Accompanied by the Director of Management Services Chiu Wing-lan, the delegation was briefed by IB’s representatives on its organisational structure, forensic examination services and latest developments. The delegation then visited an IB laboratory to understand how to develop fingerprint traces on the surfaces of objects by chemical and other scientific means, and how to perform fingerprint extraction.


The delegation also visited the CSI Mobile Laboratory, which is equipped with advanced instruments and real-time comparison function, helping to enhance the effectiveness of fingerprint identification at crime scenes.
