NTS

On June 24, the Police Tactical Unit Resident Company of New Territories South Region (NTS), together with the Operations Wing and all Districts in NTS, held a joint-departmental tabletop exercise codenamed “WOODNEEDLE” to strengthen the Force’s overall response capability during extreme weather conditions.

The exercise simulated ad-hoc scenarios under extreme weather, thoroughly testing the command, coordination and response capability of different command posts in NTS. Representatives from the Home Affairs Department, Fire Services Department, Civil Aid Service, Drainage Services Department and Civil Engineering and Development Department also participated as observers, and shared their professional insights during the post-exercise debriefing and discussion sessions.

YLDIST and TKODIST

Yuen Long District (YLDIST) co-hosted the “Extreme Weather Seminar” with seven government departments and organisations on June 17. The seminar not only strengthened communication and collaboration across the four aspects of “Advance Preparations”, “Enhanced Early Warning”, “Decisive Emergency Response” and “Speedy Recovery”, but also shared knowledge about disaster prevention with nearly 200 representatives of Rural Committees, District Council members, as well as District Services and Community Care Teams members. YLDIST compiled the relevant information into “Extreme Weather Quick Guides”, which were distributed to the community through the stakeholders.

Tseung Kwan O District (TKODIST) also organised an “Inter-departmental Exchange Forum on Extreme Weather Response” on the same day. Frontline commanders from six government departments were invited to take part.

Representatives from various departments delivered detailed presentations covering deployment before and after the storm, activation mechanism of emergency control centres, as well as inter-departmental communication and coordination while frontline officers exchanged experience on issues such as risk assessment in flooding areas, handling procedures for fallen trees and landslides sites, and rescue strategies. They also exchanged views on command and response, resource allocation, as well as safety at the site. In addition, TKODIST invited representatives from chainsaw suppliers to brief the officers on the skills of using chainsaws under extreme weather, as well as on routine maintenance tips.
