The Chief Executive (CE) Mr John Lee officiated at the CE’s Award for Exemplary Performance Presentation Ceremony on August 14 and presented a certificate to the Inter-departmental Team for Wartime Bomb Disposal with Emergency Relief and Support Services (Bomb Disposal Team), comprising the Security Bureau, the Force, the Fire Services Department and the Home Affairs Department. He commended the team for its successful handling of a wartime bomb last September, which defused a crisis and fully demonstrated the professional spirit of civil servants in rising to challenges and pursuing excellence, setting an example for the civil service.
Director of Operations Lui Kam-ho; Senior Superintendent of the Operations Wing
Leung Ming-leung; Senior Bomb Disposal Officer of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau (EODB) Suryanto Chin-chiu; and other Force officers involved in the operation received the certificate.
In September last year, a 1 000-pound wartime bomb, containing 500 pounds of high explosives with enormous destructive potential, was discovered at a construction site in Quarry Bay. With Super Typhoon Ragasa approaching, the contingency deployment became even more challenging. The Bomb Disposal Team immediately activated the interdepartmental emergency mechanism and made comprehensive deployment and response arrangements covering risk assessment, site cordoning, evacuation of residents and temporary accommodation, etc..
Following meticulous planning, the EODB executed the high-risk bomb disposal operation. The Operations Wing and the Hong Kong Island Region efficiently assisted in evacuating nearby residents and cordoning off high-risk areas. Through concerted efforts, the bomb was eventually defused safely, fully demonstrating the Government’s exceptional capabilities in efficient interdepartmental coordination, putting people first and precise execution in major emergencies.
Representative of the Bomb Disposal Team, Suryanto Chin-chiu, thanked the CE for his recognition of the team and expressed gratitude to all personnel involved in the operation. He said that every department had remained steadfast at its post and demonstrated the high level of professionalism and spirit of solidarity of
“One Government”, enabling the crisis to be handled expeditiously and safely.
Force officers will continue to stand at the forefront, safeguarding members of the public with courage, determination and solidarity, undaunted by harsh and dangerous environments.
