AML Month
The Financial Intelligence and Investigation Bureau (FIIB) held the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Month in August to promote AML messages across various sectors of the community through a series of educational and promotional activities.
To cultivate AML awareness among youth, the FIIB organised an AML workshop and a guided tour of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) Information Centre on August 15 for the top 130 students in the Hong Kong Inter-school Civic Education Officer Competition.
Additionally, the FIIB hosted the inaugural event for the AML Think Tank on August 29. 21 AML Ambassadors visited the HKMA headquarters and participated in an anti-fraud and AML sharing session to learn about the relevant legislation and common modus operandi. The Ambassadors gained an understanding of the far-reaching impact of money laundering on Hong Kong as an international financial centre.
To prevent foreign domestic helpers (FDHs) from being exploited by criminals, the FIIB partnered with Christian Action on August 16 to organise an AML seminar for 100 FDHs, sharing targeted crime prevention information with them.
To broaden the reach of public education, the FIIB also produced an educational microfilm titled Easy Money Trap. Featuring real-life cases of FDHs being recruited as stooge account holders, the film delivers the message “Don’t rent, don’t lend, and don’t sell your personal bank account to others”. The microfilm was premiered at the AML seminar on August 16 and will begin broadcasting across various social media platforms starting in September.
International Financial Investigation Course
Between August 17 and 21, the FIIB hosted the International Financial Investigation Course to facilitate in-depth discussions with local and overseas participants on issues such as combatting cross-border money laundering and terrorist financing. The course was attended by a total of 40 participants, comprising officers from 12 overseas jurisdictions, alongside those from local law enforcement agencies, financial intelligence units and financial regulatory bodies.
