The National Security Department (NSD) was invited to take part in the “Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance” for the first time this year, weaving national security (NS) education into this national intangible cultural heritage event.

The NSD specially crafted an NS fire dragon which was about 20 metres long with purple as its dominant colour, echoing the signature hue of the NSD and the traditional symbolism of “auspicious purple clouds coming from the east”. Its design embodied the belief that NS is the cornerstone for peace and stability of the nation. With fluorescent incense sticks adorning all around its head and body, the dragon symbolised prayers to ward off NS threats so as to safeguard the city’s high-quality development.

More than 20 Junior Police Call (JPC) members were responsible for bringing the NS fire dragon to life. They learned fire dragon dance techniques from Tai Hang Residents’ Welfare Association representatives before the event.

On Mid-Autumn Festival night, Deputy Commissioner (National Security) (DCP NS) Kong Hok-lai and Acting Director of National Security (Acting DNS) Kwok Ka-chuen also attended to show support. They said that the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance showcased cultural heritage along with community solidarity and harmony, which were closely linked to “cultural security” and “societal security” under A Holistic Approach to National Security. The Force hopes members of the public can shoulder together the mission of safeguarding NS, and integrate the awareness that “Safeguarding national security is the responsibility of all” into daily life.

In addition, the NSD joined hands with Wan Chai District (WCHDIST) to set up a giant balloon photo spot as well as promotional booths on national security and anti-deception at Moreton Terrace Temporary Playground to explain the culture of Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance alongside the concept of cultural security to members of the public.
