Force Nightingale

Healthy memories: WPC Ho displays photos of her nursing days
The Force's ranks have received a shot in the arm with the recent Police Training School graduation of a former nurse.

Woman Police Constable Ho Kit-wa has swapped her thermometer for a beat radio after successfully passing out with a batch of recruits on June 19.

The 22-year-old, now posted to a Patrol Sub Unit of Tseung Kwan O Division, is a registered nurse who completed a three-year course at Kwong Wah Hospital.

But the medical move was secondary to WPC Ho's dreams of becoming a police officer as a youth.

"I wanted to become an officer years ago but couldn't do it because my mum didn't feel too good about it. But after the three-year training, I've become more mature and know exactly what I want to do with my career. The Police has always been my dream and this time my mum let me have my way."

Despite her enthusiasm a number of WPC Ho's friends felt sorry she decided to give up her hard-earned professional qualification and the better salary she was earning as a nurse.

However the officer was completely non-repentant, saying: "You're going to spend a third of your lifetime on your career, so what's more important than choosing the one which you really like?

"And I don't think I'll waste what I've learned as a student nurse because as a front-line police officer you're often called to accident scenes where medical help can be required."

WPC Ho has been on a high since her life in the Force began.

"We met really nice instructors at the PTS and equally nice colleagues at the Tseung Kwan O Police Station who never fail to help me out and share their experiences with me," she said.

"From what I have seen, the Force is no different from what is depicted in recruitment television commercials - an energetic and challenging career full of opportunities to realise your potential.

"As a nurse, you work together with doctors to take care of patients and help them recover. As a police officer, you also serve the community but in a different way.

"What I am most eager to do now is to learn as much as I can and to try out different aspects of police work," she said.
