Anti-virus computer upgrades

A powerful anti-virus software will soon be installed in all Force systems to protect files.

Part of the Force-wide upgrading of Common Terminals (CTs), Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) will be made standard for Police micro-computers.

Earlier this year, the Information Technology Branch carried out technical evaluations on different anti-virus software on the market and finally chose the NAV. A site licence for the Force was negotiated, covering almost all platforms from DOS to Windows NT Server or Workstation.

NAV installation will be incorporated into the Windows NT migration which will see some 2,500 CTs rolled out by November.

With the 4,500 standalone micro-computers, the distribution of an automated installation floppy disk started in August, and formations will be notified by relevant co-ordinators on installation.

Common viruses will be detected and removed more efficiently and safely with the NAV installed, and new viruses can also be eradicated.

The NAV will also greatly reduce the spread of viruses through PEN, Internet Mail and network.

Less time will be lost to keying back or recovering lost data. Computer downtime caused by virus-related problems will also be reduced.

Periodic updates of the virus definitions will be necessary to evade the latest bugs. For PDN connected computers, the ITB will provide updates when users logon. For standalone computers diskettes will be distributed.

For details or the latest updates on Anti-Virus, visit the ITB web site at POINT under Office Automation or dial 2860-2836 and ask for the Anti-Virus Administrator.

If you are on PEN, you can address your queries to Anti-Virus Admin (itb-antivirus-admin).
