Study chance for officers' kids

A new scholarship scheme for officers' children showing outstanding academic promise, top natural talent, or with special needs, has been announced by the Personnel Services Branch.

The scholarships, worth up to $50,000, will be awarded by the Police Education Trusts for the 1999/2000 academic year. They are open to children of all police officers, both Regular and Auxiliary, and police widows or widowers. Chief Superintendent (Personnel Services) Martin Samson said: 'Today's children are the leaders of tomorrow. The object of the scheme is to give those with outstanding promise the opportunity to develop."

Subject to the availability of funding it is proposed to award up to six scholarships of $20,000 to Secondary Six students, and three of up to $50,000 to Year One students in university. Scholarships will also be available for children showing outstanding natural talent in areas such as music or sport, or with special needs such as physical or mental disabilities.

They will need to show they would benefit substantially from specialised training either locally or overseas. In the latter two categories, the Joint Management Committee of the Police Education Trusts will consider the applications and the amount awarded will depend on the circumstances of each individual case. The application criteria for secondary students is they must have obtained at least six distinctions (A grade) in the 1999 Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination and be admitted to full time Secondary Six study for the 1999/2000 academic year.

For university scholarships students must have obtained at least three distinctions (Grade A) in the 1999 Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (two Advanced Supplementary Subjects being equal to one Advanced Level subject) and be admitted to Year One of a full-time degree course in a tertiary institute for the 1999/2000 school year. Equivalent academic achievements in other jurisdictions will be considered on their merits. Applications for secondary student scholarships must reach the PSB by September 10, and other applications by September 30. Application forms are available from Police Welfare Offices, Training and Staff Relations Officers and can be downloaded from POINT. Further details are available from the Secretary of the Police Education Trusts on 2804-1107 or the PSB Help Desk on 2804-1131.
