Seafarers meet Police Shippers, fisherfolk and other sea workers were drilled on the latest crime trends and prevention methods by Marine Police on August 26. The seminar was held at Marine Headquarters, Sai Wan Ho with the Commanders of Marine Harbour and Marine West Divisions, Leung Wai-shing and Kong Sai-cheong, and other senior officers conducting the session. It was attended by about 30 people from shipping firms and fishing associations.
They were briefed on the work of different Marine divisions and the latest crime situation in Hong Kong waters, including oil barge robberies, and the theft of vessels, parts and other valuables. They were told of Police efforts in tackling the problems. Officers also reminded marine dwellers and workers to take precautions and help fight crime. A host of advanced crime prevention devices were also recommended including powerful lights, closed-circuit TV, alarm systems, and safes. An oil barge owner, guest speaking, told how an early report to Police thwarted an extortion attempt. He presented officers with a banner of thanks for their quick work in the case. A question-and-answer session saw participants raise a number of issues such as the theft and cross-boundary smuggling of local boats.
Marine Regional Commander Foo Tsun-kong thanked attendees and reiterated Police efforts to keep Hong Kong waters safe.
