Youth cultural ambassadors return
September 11 saw nine officers' children gather at the Police Sports and Recreation Club to share their personal experiences in seeing the wide world outside Hong Kong.
A total of 11 officers' children participated in an overseas exchange programme over the summer, sponsored by the Police Welfare Fund Scholarship Scheme and co-ordinated by AFS Intercultural Exchanges.
They spent time with host families in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, taking in the spectacular sights and frolicking with the fauna, while at the same time learning about other cultures. Moreover, their English proficiency also received a boost.
Four of them spoke of their experiences abroad and its benefits before thanking the sponsors and host families.
Chief Superintendent of the Personnel Services Branch Martin Samson and sponsors' representatives also attended and sampled a display of photos taken by the youths in their host countries.
The McDonald's AFS Scholarship Scheme for the children of Junior Police Officers has been running successfully for the last few years, and applications for the 2000/2001 programme are now being invited. For details, please see the PEN message issued on September 9, or keep an eye on the coming issue of OffBeat.
