New rugby season kicks-off

'Fei Mooi' on the pitch in Sweden |
After last year's impressive collection of silverware, the Police Rugby Team is back in training for even greater glory this season.
Under the steadfast leadership of veteran prop Dave Lewis, one of Hong Kong's most capped players, and guided by the coaching talents of another local guru 'The Welsh Wizard' Ian Strange, the season looks set to be one of its most competitive ever.
This time two teams will take to the turf, the ageing but experienced First Team will play in the Second Division leaving the developing but considerably fitter Police Panthers to compete in the Fifth Division.
The season started on September 18 with several teams taking to the footy pitch at the Police Sports and Recreation Club to get warmed up as the season kicks in.

Apart from the official police team, a sevens team comprising police officers also competed as part of the World Police and Fire Games in Sweden and put up a proud and gutsy performance despite immense competition.
Acting Sergeant Andy Li Wing-wah (a.k.a. 'ei Mooi') distinguished himself so well he was selected to play for an All-Star side comprised of some of the world's best players, against an all-Swedish side.
Team Manager B.J. Smith said: "We weren't too surprised Andy got selected as he is one of the most talented players in the Police Rugby Club and has already represented the Hong Kong Dragons and the National A sides. But few sportsmen in Hong Kong have played in a team of that quality and experience."
He said the side included two former Tongan internationals, an Italian international, and two South African Super 12 players. "So it came as no surprise the big match ended in a comprehensive victory against the Swedes," B.J. added.
He said the Police Rugby Club was committed to developing the game, particularly among local officers who make up the majority of the Panthers side.
He said those interested in taking up the game were welcome to attend training sessions at the Police Sports and Recreation Club at 6 pm Wednesdays and 4 pm Saturdays, or to call Dave Lewis on 2669-6271 for enquiries.
