Schoolies help Police caution jaywalkers

Pedestrian patrol: A volunteer hands out road-safety leaflets

Secondary school volunteers joined Police to launch the Road Safety Ambassador Scheme recently in a bid to lower traffic casualties.

The teenagers, known as the Road Safety Patrol, have accompanied uniformed officers to warn pedestrians disobeying traffic laws near their schools. They are also helping distribute pamphlets containing road safety tips. The work will continue under the scheme, which has seen about 700 Patrol members from 51 schools join up since it started in October. More volunteers were expected.
