Beats, berets - caps, ceremonies

With regard to the growing debate over Force headgear, Mr N.D. Howcroft's assertion that we should wear the cap with pride I wholeheartedly agree with. But could it not be confined to ceremonial non-operational circumstances? Have we asked our customers, the public, what they think?

I exhort officers to stand at ground level of any highrise building, some eighty to hundred feet distant, look directly ahead wearing the cap and count how many floors they can easily view.

Then remove the cap and count how many floors they can see. If it is not at least double the number I will eat my Force-issue cap. It is instructive that on the opposite page of the previous OffBeat issue a Sergeant is photographed doing an extremely brave act sans issued headgear. Is he to be commended or defaulted? I am sure Senior Management would not wish to compromise the safety in any way, of any officer.

In closing, I note that the last Governor saw fit to take over his posting wearing not the uniform of office but merely a suit.
