Blitz proving effective

Some 1,150 summonses against jaywalkers and over 200 for drivers were issued in the first two weeks of Operation Eagle Eye.

About 1,350 people still risked their lives and others' by jaywalking or jumping red lights, despite police warnings and publicity on the operation by Traffic Kowloon West.

Luckily, however, provisional figures showed only 23 minor injuries or damage-only cases occurred along Nathan Road from March 1 to 15, mostly involving cars and vans. Accident figures were down 30 per cent on March last year.

The formation said results of the blitz were encouraging and it was cautiously optimistic of success as driver, passenger and pedestrian care and attention seemed to have improved. However, officers would continue vigorous enforcement to make Nathan Road's hectic junctions safer.

The formation bolstered its efforts against redlight jumping late last year assisted by additional redlight cameras and increased enforcement action. Some 20 blackspots on Nathan Road now have cameras which can photograph licence plates of redlight jumpers 24-hours a day.

More than 10,000 drivers were fined some $4.5 million last year.

Almost 1,700 drivers were caught last month. Installation of cameras at another 50 Kowloon West junctions was being considered.
