Mega-campaign on minibuses

Hot handout: Officers distribute pamphlets featuring complaint hotlines and other information at a minibus stop

An extensive publicity drive on the dangers of speeding minibuses was conducted by the Road Safety Section, including staff from Traffic Branch Headquarters and the five land Regions, on May 9 and 10.

Some 42 officers issued about 1,400 pamphlets to minibus drivers reminding them not to speed, and around 5,000 leaflets featuring the Transport Complaints Unit hotline were distributed to passengers at 128 minibus stops in 52 locations across Hong Kong.

The operation reminded drivers of the fatal consequences of speeding and encouraged passengers to monitor and report speeding cases. It also reiterated the Force's stringent enforcement of speed limits would continue.

Minibus speeding has aroused public concern and an interdepartmental working group has been set up between Police and the Transport Department to examine the problem. Statistics showed only a small portion of minibus drivers were habitual speeders, however to prevent accidents, Police would continue enforcement against all speeding vehicles including minibuses.
