Yau continues reign as squash supremo



Court in session: High-speed squash action at the POC

Yau Wing-wah retained his title in a hard-fought final at Police Squash Club Closed Championships at the Police Officers' Club on May 18.

Defending champion Yau fended off a determined Peter Barnes to retain his trophy, winning 9-3, 9-4, 9-2 in three games.

In the final of the Chairman's Cup, Tony Chow Shek-kin beat Chan Hok-ming 9-7, 3-9, 9-2, 5-9, 9-2 in a fiercely-contested match which saw many long rallies.

The Chairman's Plate was won by Tam Yip-shing who defeated Yuen Chun-kwong 9-1, 9-1, 9-4, after the latter valiantly fought through a tough field to reach the final.

Most Improved Player title went to Yuen Wai-cheong while Player of the Year was Nelson Chiu Ho-wah.

Prize presentations were held during the Club AGM held afterwards. The following were elected committee members for 2000/2001: Peter Barnes, chairman; Donnie Choy Yuk-kwong, vice chairman and social convenor; Kenny Ip Lau-chuen, treasurer; Fred Tsui Chung-wai, secretary; Nelson Chiu Ho-wah, uniform and equipment; and, Leung Chi-man, training and development.

Some 30 members attended the AGM and prizes were presented by chairman Ian Nicholson who starts pre-retirement leave this month. Members said Mr Nicholson was an "icon" of the Club, dedicating much of his spare time, energy and enthusiasm ensuring it was well managed, balanced and heading in the right direction. Members thanked him for his friendship, support and commitment to police squash over the years and wished he and his family all the best and a happy retirement.
