Triumph on the track!

Police Athletics Council Chairman Stuart McDouall reports on the action-packed 2001 Police Athletics Championships, held March 27

The desultory weather hanging over the Wan Chai Sports Ground put some competitors off, but could not stop stalwarts like Hong Kong Island Emergency Unit Superintendent Victor Yiu Kai-bor who stoically completed the 10,000-metre race before leading his team to win the Minor Units Trophy.

This year's Police Athletics Championships saw only one record broken with Police Tactical Unit Woman Police Constable Wong Sze-wan throwing the javelin 26.64 metres, beating the old mark set in 1997, by 21 centimetres.

Long jump winner, EU HKI's PC Lo Siu-pan was hotly challenged by Eastern PC Wong Chun-wing, both clearing 6.5 metres in an awesome display of un-aided flight.

The long-distance running saw old rivals the Airport Security Unit and PTU dominate the field taking trophies in the open and senior categories. In the 1,500 metres race, ASU PC Chan Man-for and PTU Chief Inspector Andy Naylor brought the stands to their feet as they sprinted neck-to-neck for the line, with Chan earning his win with a final lunge.

The relay races provided an upset when EU HKI beat hot favourites ASU in the 4x100 event.

In the 4x400 invitation relay it was the Fire Services Department who carried away the prize after a close race against Correctional Services.

The day's Victor and Victrix Ludorum went to PC Chan and WPC Wong. Veteran runner, PTU SGT Chow Chi-keung won the Carpe Diem or 'Seize-the-Day' Trophy. And a beaming Kevin Woods, PTU Deputy Commandant, collected the Specialist and Training Units Trophy, again!

Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui officiated at the presentation, assisted by Deputy Commissioner (Management) Dick Lee Ming-kwai, and the Directors of Operations and Management Services Ng Wai-kit and Gordon Fung Siu-yuen.
