MP crew in maritime 'rescue'

Marine Port District joined the Government Flying Service, the Fire Services and Marine Departments, for a joint search, rescue and fire-fighting exercise in Tseung Kwan O, May 16. Part of the District's Maritime Safety Promotion Campaign, the exercise was to promote fire safety at sea in the run-up to the fishing moratorium period from June 1 to August 1.

The drill scenario involved a fishing vessel catching fire off Sai Kung with its crew members struggling in the water. Three Marine Police launches sped to the scene along with MD and FSD vessels. The five crew were saved from the sea within five minutes, and the fire was brought under control. Marine officers also conducted first aid on one of the rescued fishermen and he later recovered in hospital.

MP District Commander Kenneth Davey said: "Rescues of this type are not uncommon in reality, and regular exercises help enhance Marine officers' efficiency and boost their co-operation with other responding departments."
