In an age dominated by selfishness and self-indulgence, 385 exemplary youth attended the Hong Kong Award for Young People presentation ceremony where they were presented Bronze Awards by Deputy Commissioner Management Dick Lee Ming-kwai on August 15. They were among the 463 Junior Police Call members and four junior police officers eligible for the Bronze Awards. The ceremony held at the Police Sports and Recreation Club was also a highlight day in the lives of 11 voluntary instructors, on hand to proudly receive Certificates of Appreciation presented to them to mark distinguished service and support to the community. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lee said: "The aim of these Awards is to encourage young people to reach out, to serve, to keep fit and healthy, and to fully develop their interests and potential." He congratulated the Award recipients and extended his gratitude to 18 voluntary instructors, some of whom are serving police officers. Eleven of the voluntary instructors attended the presentation ceremony.
The Award, previously called the Duke of Edinburgh Award, has been helping young people aged between 14 and 25, for nearly 40 years. Participants are awarded if they successfully complete specified activities in the skills, service, expedition and physical recreation categories.
