Fast track application launch

I've always thought that the nicest thing about the MS Office shortcut bar is that it allows users to launch Office applications such as MS Word with just a click of the mouse. Think how handy it would be if you could launch other applications in this way. Let's find out!

In the copy below I am going to guide you through the process of adding another an application to your MS Office shortcut bar.

Please follow the steps below:

1. Click the leftmost -shaped button on the MS Office shortcut bar.

2. Select "Customize ..." in the menu shown.

3. Click to select the "Buttons" tag in the "Customize" dialog box.

4. Click the "Add File..." button to bring up the "Add File" dialog box.

5. Locate the executable file of the application, which is generally has the extension of "exe", "com" or "bat" in the "Look in" field at the top. For instance, the path for "Lotus Notes R5" is: "D:\Program Files\lotus\notes\notes.exe", and you just need to access the .exe file by double clicking each sub-directory from left to right in the directory tree.

6. Click the "Add" button near the bottom and the application icon will appear in the "Show these Files as Buttons:" list box.

7. Instruct the icon in the shortcut bar by highlighting it and then clicking either the "upward" arrow (¡ô) or the "downward" arrow (¡õ) in the "Move" area.

8. Click the "OK" button when finished.

It does not seem all that hard, right? See, you too can launch applications on the go now. It is simple and efficient and besides, you may try to add the shortcut for "Lotus Notes R5" into the shortcut bar to launch it and speed up your work.

I hope this column has given you some insight into how these tactics can make our work easier. So please support us and send me your thoughts to "ap2-ss34-aitb@ police.gov.hk" and come back next time. See you!
