CP compliments brave officers

PC Sze Kwan-ming and SPC Lai Chi-wai (right): together again

Two valiant officers were recently the proud recipients of Commissioner's Commendations in the form of a certificate and a whistle lanyard presented by Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui for professionalism, courage and devotion of an exceptionally high order demonstrated during a recent shooting incident at Kowloon City at a presentation ceremony at Kowloon City Police Station on August 30.

Senior Police Constable Lai Chi-wai and Police Constable Sze Kwan-ming sustained serious gunshot wounds while endeavouring to intercept and question four armed suspects at the junction of Peace Avenue and Waterloo Road during an anti-burglary operation on May 22.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tsang highly commended the two officers stating: "Their acts of bravery may have prevented the culprits from committing a crime which might have resulted in serious injury to members of the public.

"I am delighted that PC Sze has fully recovered and resumes duty today and I am looking forward to seeing SPC Lai's return to the Force after his full recuperation."

Mr Tsang also asked all Force members to offer support and encouragement to the duo.

SPC Lai and PC Sze then presented souvenirs to the representatives of Queen Elizabeth and Kwong Wah Hospitals respectively in appreciation of their meticulous care.

Talking to OffBeat earlier, SPC Lai and PC Sze expressed their thanks to doctors and nurses at the two hospitals as well as their families and friends, Force management, colleagues, Personnel Services Branch staff and members of the public for their unfailing support and assistance.

Both officers said the incident gave them much food for thought. SPC Lai said: "The incident demonstrated the importance of team spirit. Prompt action by other colleagues after the incident played a vital role in our fight for survival."

PC Sze agreed: "Another insight for me was the realisation that life is very precious and we should always treasure everything we have now including our life, family, friends and colleagues."

The incident also cemented their bond of friendship. "Since we were treated in different hospitals, we desperately wished to know about each other's condition. When we finally reached each other by phone, the joy and relief we felt was unforgettable," said PC Sze.
