Value both your life and your job

Hong Kong has experienced both an economic downturn and a rise in unemployment in recent years. The terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11 also had an additional negative impact on the economy. As a result, many members of the public expressed their grievances regarding the Government's response to this situation through the media. Instead of blaming the Government, I think we should support the Government and its policies during this difficult period.

Being a member of the disciplined services, I should not be affected by negative public opinion. With a desire to serve the community, I joined the Force in 1987 after graduating from secondary school. My 14 years in the Force have broadened my outlook and strengthened my resolve. My job not only offers me excellent opportunities for further education but has also improved my standard of living. I was allocated a unit in police quarters shortly after I married which alleviated many concerns I had at the time. The living environment that I now enjoy is undoubtedly on a par with other private residential buildings.

The Force offers me a stable job with good fringe benefits, and I do not have to worry about being made redundant due to the poor economic situation. In fact, there have been excellent changes and improvements made within the Force recently.

A series of meetings between management and junior police officers was held to further enhance internal communications, indicating that management is promoting a more transparent organisation. Another example was the implementation of the Enhanced Productivity Programme. As a result officers have been making a concerted effort to be living examples of their Force motto "We serve with pride and care".

Observing the sacrifices and hardships many people are having to make as a result of current economic woes, I realise that I am very lucky and should not take my good fortune for granted. So, I now place greater value on both my life and my job. Devoting myself to duty, I shall work with my colleagues to enforce law and order in Hong Kong in order to guarantee that our city maintains its international reputation as one of the world's most liveable cities.
