Sau Mau Ping Police District organised a 'Fight Crime and Environmental Protection Carnival 2001' at Amoy Shopping Centre on September 9. Officiating at the opening ceremony were Sau Mau Ping District Commander Tony Au Yiu-kwan, Kwun Tong District Council Chairman Hau Shui-pui, Kwun Tong District Fight Crime Committee Chairman Fung Kam-chiu and Sau Mau Ping Junior Police Call's Honorary Presidents.

"The overall public order and crime situation in Sau Mau Ping District for the first half of 2001 has been stable. The overall crime rate from January to August was 1,693 cases, a decrease of 18.5 per cent from the same period last year. Violent crime rates, including robbery, snatching and burglary are dropping, while street deceptions are increasing slightly." said Mr Au.

"To raise residents' crime prevention awareness, particularly with regard to street deceptions, SMP Police District has been holding a series of street fight crime drives since June with a view to educating the residents on the latest street deceptions so they will not fall into the traps of criminals

"The crime rate in the district is falling and as such credit must go to the co-operation between the Force and the public. In the days to come the Police will zero in in their efforts to fight crime and psychotropic drug abuse amongst youngsters. I hope the public will render their continuing support to the Police in fighting crime." he added.

Apart from emphasising community crime problems, the Carnival also added environmental protection to its theme, hoping to provide the public with a deeper understanding of these issues with the hope that they will get together to protect and improve the environment in order to transform Hong Kong into a 'Green City'.

Carnival events included a performance by singers, a fight crime quiz, designated game stalls promoting 'crime fighting', 'drug fighting' and 'environmental protection', children's electric car funland, crime prevention exhibition car and JPC's activities exhibition.

The varied programme attracted a huge number of residents, achieving the goal of promoting the fight-crime message.
