Psynet series - Rising from the depths: A sensitive period

In the previous few issues, we have shared with you our clients' experiences about struggling through difficult times. We hope that their stories not only delivered the message that 'there is always hope', but also facilitated readers' understanding regarding the psychological state-of-mind of people facing various kinds of problems.

When facing adversity, we all long for the support and understanding of others. We may also wish others could provide us with more concrete, objective advice to help us. There is also the concern about whether other people will regard us as misfits. We may become over-sensitive about comments and looks from other people and read more into these than is really intended. We may also not appreciate the apathetic attitudes of those who do not really care to provide any help.

Patience is also important when handling these colleagues who have hit rock-bottom with their problems. Likewise, blaming, or reprimanding, people who have sunk to these depths due to their problems may not be effective, and can actually be counter-productive. They may have already opened up and voiced some of their problems to someone they can trust, or may even be considering seeking professional help. When support is not forthcoming, or when a person is being urged to seek professional counselling, they may retreat even further into themselves. Our attitude does make a great difference as to whether they will eventually come forward and seek the help they need.

Let's create a more caring culture in the Force.
