Ho family's double honour

For Police Constable Henry Ho and his mother, Senior Woman Police Constable Ho Or Lai-hing, this autumn will hold special memories for many years to come. Why? Because both were recently announced as recipients of a Commanding Officer's Commendation (COC).

Ho Or Lai-hing? That name rings a bell, but why? Well, you are correct and this is the reason why. SWPC Ho joined two colleagues from Sham Shui Po Division to arrest a man armed with a loaded pistol in Lai Kok Estate on October 5 last year. She was awarded a COC for her outstanding performance in this high profile case.

"What a coincidence that my son and I were both informed we were to be COC recipients!" laughed SWPC Ho.

Recently transferring to Wan Chai Division Patrol Sub-unit Team Four, PC Ho will be awarded a COC for his professionalism and devotion to duty of a very high order while serving in the Eastern District Special Duty Squad between July 2 last year and August 24 this year. Reflecting on his childhood, PC Ho said that his mother's service in the Force did have some influence on his choice of career.

"When my mother put on the Force uniform, she looked so professional and smart. The positive image she projected impressed me a lot, so I made up my mind to join this 'big family'," recalled PC Ho. He did not, however, reveal his determination to become a policeman to his mother until he was invited to attend the recruitment interview with his parents nine years ago.

"She was a little surprised when I told her my decision," remembered PC Ho. WSPC Ho told OffBeat that she was glad to see her son joining the Force and was very proud of him.

"Working for the same organisation as my son has been a great experience. My son and I have become even closer as we now understand each other so well. There is nothing like a 'generation gap' between us and we always exchange views on our daily work," she said. Having served with the Force for almost 35 years, SWPC Ho is going to retire this coming Christmas. Does she have any words of advice for her son? "My advice to my son? Well, I would advise him to pursue lifelong learning in order to cope with the ever changing knowledge-oriented world." PC Ho totally agreed with his mother. "I have enrolled in some police-related courses to further qualify myself and to get ready for further advancement in the future."

It's a family affair... PC Henry Ho and SWPC Ho Or Lai-hing
