Enhancing services to the news media

To further enhance Police services to the media, the Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) has started providing information on major incidents as they develop in the form of'Police Electronic Bulletin' (PEB) via the Police Homepage.

Hong Kong Police Force has its own website which aims at providing information, such as statistics on crimes and traffic accidents, and on-line application/enquiries for the public as well as the media. However, there is a growing demand from the media to obtain timely and updated information on incidents from the Police.

As a result, officers of the Information Technology Branch e-Police Unit developed the PEB specifically aimed at providing instant and accurate information on selected incidents as they develop on the Force homepage. The general public and the media can access the bulletin through the homepage.

The PEB, under normal situation, can only handle five incidents at any one time.

The PPRB Newsroom duty officer will decide which incident should be loaded onto the PEB. Once information of a specific incident appears on the system, the duty officer will issue an'Attention News Editors' (ANE) to alert the local news media.

Information on PEB will be updated at hourly intervals until the incident is closed or the duty officer considers further information is not required. An'ANE' will also be issued accordingly.

The new system was launched by Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui at a press conference on January 17. It will be reviewed in three months. Members of the news media will be invited to comment.
