Acting New Territories North Regional Commander David Thomas at a press briefing on January 28 announced that more than 3,000 kilogrammes of fireworks in San Tin were seized that day - the largest seizure in 18 months.

This followed his warning issued on January 23 that Police would take vigorous enforcement action against people during the Lunar New Year period for importing, selling, discharging or in possession of fireworks.

He reminded the public that any person caught contravening the law on fireworks was liable upon conviction to a maximum fine of $25,000 and six months' imprisonment.

It is believed that the latest seizure of fireworks when detonated could cause structural damage to buildings within a radius of 50 meters and lethal up to 100 metres.
