(This is the translated version of an essay by Woman Police Constable Shum Wai-man of Yuen Long District.)

Nowadays, members of the public expect more from the civil service, continue to demand higher transparency, efficiency and better service quality. To keep pace with the changing environment, the Police Force in response has established the Service Quality Wing, CAPOs and Complaints Prevention Committee - all aimed at maintaining its service pledge, mission, vision as well as the reputation of our profession.

We have introduced modern and state-of-the-art equipment, more user-friendly facilities and pleasant working environment. Police officers are also moving in the right direction by attending workshops and adopting new ideas and concepts in order to upgrade themselves and to tie in with the efforts of the Force.

It is not easy for some to come to terms with the changes because they consider the introduction of new measures unnecessary. With the reforms implemented now bearing fruit, the pessimists are reconsidering their resistance to accept the changes. They are mingling and becoming a part of the new environment.

We must be aware that some of the procedures that used to be practicable are no longer so. We must understand that serving the community is our objective. In handling an incident, for example, we should be more considerate in achieving our objective amicably. Saying simple words like "sorry", "excuse me" and "please" will certainly impress the person we are dealing with, and who may feel that we are not really trying to give them a hard time and will appreciate our good manners and professionalism. Such simple words do work wonders. So let's try this approach today!

I tend to be tolerant when seeing people do wrong. When stopping a passer-by for an ID check, we may be met with an unfriendly attitude. But we should bear in mind and understand that the person is ignorant of the law, which needs to be upheld to prevent crime.

By being compassionate and endeavouring to provide a professional service, we definitely will achieve the goal of serving the public with pride and care.
