A group of Mong Kok officers were recently rewarded for their innovative idea during a presentation ceremony of the 15th Police Staff Suggestions Scheme (PSSS) and Motivation Scheme (PSMS) held earlier.

The group, dubbed "Mong Kok District Computer Group", designed an electronic district brief for colleagues newly transferred to the district.

In recognition of their creativity and innovation, the group was presented with a PSMS award.

The electronic brief, in the form of a slide show, is saved in a CD. It contains essential information of the district including geographical features, crime situation and figures, policing difficulties, manpower deployment and establishment.

Assistant District Commander Operations, Mr Bernie So Kam-tong, the leader of the eight-member group, said that the introduction of the electronic brief greatly enhanced the effectiveness of officers' orientation.

Mr So explained: "Traditionally, an induction programme, which included an oral briefing and a tour around the district, was organised to help new colleagues familiarise themselves with the district. However, such one-off arrangement is inadequate for newly transferred officers to get a good grip of the local situation.

"With the electronic brief, colleagues can repeatedly go through every aspects of the policing issues of our district whenever and wherever they like."

Team members, Woman Police Constable Shirley Cheung Chin-yee and Police Constable Edward Ng Kim-wah said that the project allowed them to learn more about IT techniques, footage editing, digital photo-taking and script writing.

Another team member, Senior Inspector Brendan Lim said that copies of the electronic brief were kept in the district and Police Training School for colleagues' reference.

Mr Lim continued: "Many other formations have shown interest in our electronic brief and I have received a number of enquiries regarding its production."

During the PSSS and PSMS presentation ceremony, Director of Management Services, Mr Fung Siu-yuen presented PSMS awards to Mong Kok District Computer Group, Crime Section of Kwun Tong Division and Work Improvement Team of Wan Chai Division.

The latter two devised a proforma for debt-collection related cases and set up a broadcast system manned by Junior Police Officers for disseminating information in changing rooms during shifts changeover respectively.

Another 25 officers from various formations were also awarded for their innovative ideas. Among them, 22 officers were PSSS awardees while the remaining three were presented with Letters of Appreciation.
