The first of the three training courses for Junior Police Officers and Inspectors to enhance their ability in handling juvenile delinquency ended last month with participants agreeing that the course had broadened their perspectives and sharpened their skills in handling juvenile delinquency.

They also concurred that the two-week course involving attachment to a non-governmental organisation (NGO), attending lectures at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, pre-attachment training and field studies had "stimulated their thinking on using multi-disciplinary approach to other social problems in their own districts."

The aim of the training course was to:

  • broaden exposure and enhance problem-solving capabilities;

  • facilitate professional exchange and understanding amongst Police officers and social workers, and

  • explore ways to prevent juvenile delinquency.

According to the participants, the attachment and field studies had given them a better understanding of social workers' role in youth work and the culture of youth at risk, and dispelling misconception of Police by social workers and youths.

The next course will be held in November and the third in January 2003.
