Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr George Wright-Nooth, passed away on June 12 in the United Kingdom.

The late Mr Wright-Nooth joined the Force in 1940 as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent and rose to the rank of Deputy Commissioner in 1969. He retired in 1971 after which he became the first Security Controller in the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club until his departure from Hong Kong in 1981.

Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui has sent a letter of condolence to Mr Wright-Nooth's daughter, Sarah. And Senior Superintendent Bernie So, who is on secondment at UK's Police institute in Bramshill, sent a wreath on behalf of the Force.

Several retired senior officers also attended the funeral service. They included three former Deputy Commissioners, Messrs Chris Dawson, John Sheppard and Keith Lomas.

During World War II, Mr Wright-Nooth was imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp at Stanley for nearly four years. During this period he succeeded in recording prison life in his diary.

His first-hand account of what happened in some parts of Hong Kong during the wartime years was published in his book entitled "Prisoner of the Turnip Heads".
