New Police vans more powerful

During the last two months, 30 of the 60 new large vans ordered have been delivered to Emergency Units.

These are Mercedes Benz 314 "Sprinter", which are part of the fleet of 520 large vans that form the backbone of the police fleet, and are used by all formations for patrol, support services and internal security (IS) work.

The new van has many improved features including a more powerful engine. It is slightly larger than a Ford Transit and has more safety equipment.

But the most noticeable feature is the internal layout. SIP Fan Man-fai, Technical Support, Transport Division who was closely involved with the design of the new vehicles said: "These are standard Mercedes Benz model 314 vans which are specially converted by government contractors for Police use.

"All large vans have a dual use for normal policing and IS work. For IS work they have to carry 11 passengers and there is a large space at the back that is not normally used during normal policing.

"With the help of Emergency Unit, the contractors have built racks that can carry equipment safely and tidily, but these racks can easily be removed if there is ever a need to use the vehicles for IS work or to carry 11 passengers.

"There is also a hanger for the large "Armadillo" shield that EUs carry. This will help stop it getting scratched and it can be taken out quickly if there is a need."

According to Sergeant Wong Lik-nin of EU HKI, the feedback from EU officers has been very positive.

"The drivers are very happy with the new van. The performance is very good and it is more spacious inside. The seats are comfortable and the safety features commendable. It is also very easy to drive with a good turning circle."

Plenty of space for Police equipment
