A fun-filled but challenging self-enhancement summer programme was laid on for 104 children of Force members between July 27 and August 8. It was organised by the Police Chinese Wushu Club in conjunction with Fujian's Putian Southern Shaolin Study Association.

During their 13-day stay in Putian, the energetic kids had the opportunity to practise Chinese martial arts, attend drill practice with the military police and receive intensive physical training. They also took part in farm work and visited several famous scenic spots in the birthplace of Shaolin Wushu.

The programme also featured a series of cultural activities including the study of Chinese history and the development of Shaolin Wushu, learning Putonghua, singing, sculpting in clay and watching astonishing performances by local students, martial arts groups and the military police.

Sergeant Li Wai-chung's 11-year-old son, Chun-wai, told OffBeat that he had had a wonderful time in Putian and made a lot of new friends.

"During the first few days, I was very unhappy because I missed my mum and dad so much. However, once I got close with other kids, I began to enjoy the activities. I particularly liked making clay sculptures because it allowed me to express my creativity and gave me a deep sense of satisfaction."

Personal Secretary Leung Ki-fong's 17-year-old son, Fung Wei-lun, said that the programme not only gave him the opportunity to develop self-discipline but also helped him to get fit.

Once overweight Wei-lun enthused: "I actually lost a total of six pounds during my stay in Putian and that was an unexpected bonus of a most rewarding trip."

A spokesman of the Wushu Club said: "The response of participants to the training programme was so encouraging that the Club has decided to organise similar activities next year."
