Challenges and experience-sharing for summer campers |

Earlier, more than 50 youths from Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing and Lantau districts attended a challenging three-day summer training camp at the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Group's Jockey Club Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp. The event was organised by New Territories South under the Hong Kong Awards for Young People (HKAYP) scheme. The youths learned such skills as orienteering, canoeing, and raft-making. Not only did they get a taste of learning outside of the classroom, they also got to know themselves a lot better and realise the importance of coordination and teamwork. Acting Assistant Commissioner (Training), Mr Ho Tsz-tong; New Territories South Deputy Regional Commander, Mr Tang Kam-moon, and District Commanders (or their representatives) from Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing and Lantau all took time out from their tight schedules to attend the closing ceremony. One of the officiating guests, Ms Ngai Man-ling (Outstanding Youth Awardee and Asian Games Winner), related her personal experiences as a struggling teenager. She explained how she faced adversity, discovered her own potential, and worked tenaciously towards the personal goals she set herself. Another guest, Ms Cheng Kin-ying (Recipient of an HKAYP Gold Award), also calling on personal experience, described the effort required by anyone wishing to win a coveted Gold Award. This heartfelt experience-sharing moved the audience immensely. Twins Tse Ka-fai and Tse Ka-wai, who attended the camp and closing ceremony, said: "Although our team lost in the group competition, we learned that winning or losing is not what matters, it is the striving to succeed that counts." Another participant, Cheng Ying-fai said, "I met a lot of new friends and learned the importance of cooperating with others. I will definitely continue taking part in HKAYP activities and I will also encourage friends to join me." A Police Constable, Mr Cheng Kwong-chun, observed: "I was very much involved in all the camp activities and believe that HKAYP activities not only teach me a lot but they also help to alleviate work-related stress." The HKAYP is an international youth awards scheme and caters to the different needs and interests of all teenagers. The HKAYP mission is to promote and cultivate a sense of adventure in youths, to help them develop their personal interests and potential, and make them challenge themselves through a programme that also promotes youth well-being. Participants experience all-rounded development, independence and self-discipline, and can also develop a sense of responsibility and tenacity, all qualities that are beneficial to their future.
